Demography

Ethnic groups

German-Americans

-biggest settlement group in the United States

-huge numbers of Germans settle the Middle West in the antebellum era

-in addition to city migration

-post-Liberty and Union War (1868-76) this turns into further migration

-especially when German migration to France halts after French Wars > Fourth French War (1880-4)

-and with Antillean War (1880-4) and discovery of some measures to stop yellow fever, settlement of South begins apace

-combined with South having massive deficiency in men of marriable age and Germans being suitably white and many Protestant, a lot of young single Germans immigrate into South in this era to get some ladies

-results in a lot of Germans in general immigrating into the South

-urban migration speeds up in this era with about half or so being returnees to Germany afterwards

-final immigration wave comes with French Wars > Sixth French War (1937-41) before it largely ends

British-Americans

-often broken up by nation

-though following British Wars > Popular Revolution (1827-9) this drops a lot and a lot more people identify themselves as "Britons"

-largely settle frontier most of all

-due to British land companies existing

-buys a lot of land from Bank of the United States > Second Bank of the United States (1828-1868) which quickly booms in size

-with end of Liberty and Union War (1868-76) there are a lot of Scots to emigrate

-due to crofting lands being way smaller than opened lands

-along with their Appalachian cousins help to shape Kances deeply

Laurentian-Americans

-a lot of people move to New England

-with Maine and Vermont both having massive Francophone populations

-fewer Irish Catholics means that they become essentially synonymous with Catholic Church

-and Catholic Church helps them to preserve their culture

Italian-Americans

-much smaller than OTL

-due to large scale Italian migration to France

-as well as Italy doing a better job of promoting economic development in its south here

-so big Italian-American hotspot is Little Italy neighborhood of New York City

-as well as in New Jersey

-with pizza fairly heard of in New York and less so in New Jersey though not so much elsewhere in the US

Irish-Americans

-a lot less than OTL

-a much smaller Irish famine which occurred during US's Wars > Luisiana War (1825-8) which made it utterly impossible for Irish people to emigrate to the US and they instead moved to Canada

-this in turn reduces chain migration over time to the US

-also Ireland has a way healthier demography and so does not bleed quite so much people

Creole

-includes Cajuns here

-dominant over large swathes of Orleans

-speak a very irregular dialect of French

-with a lot of Spanish influence due to a lot of Creoles being descended from Spanish settlers

-and also a fair number of German influence

Jewish Americans

-somewhat later than OTL due to France being right there

-and attracting them

-after Young Russian Revolution (1902-8) a lot of Russian Jews choose to flee and many far off to US

-with its better reputation and all now that Liberty and Union War (1868-76) struggles over

-over 20th century Jewish American community expands dramatically

Slavic-Americans

Russian-Americans

-in aftermath of Liberty and Union War (1868-76) a lot of Russians attracted to come

-a lot of them coming from Little Russia region

-and Russians fleeing Russo-Chinese War (1893-9) flee to US in large numbers

-this creates myriad Little Moscows across the US

Polish-Americans

-less than OTL

-due to France being right there and absorbing way more of them

Scandinavian-Americans

Icelandic-Americans

-due to overpopulation in Iceland there's mass emigration

-with the US with its great amount of frosty land being a big destination

-Pembina ends up being the site of a huge area of settlement known as New Iceland

Asian-Americans

-pretty large due to periods in American history in which tap of immigrants from Europe stopped

-resulting in the nation looking eastwards for immigrants instead

Chinese-Americans

-come in as part of mining booms as part of same process happening in Buenaventura

-first one Country folders/United States/Economy/Mineral rushes > Pikes Peak Gold Rush (1878) sees a lot of Chinese people (mostly men)

-there's an initial backlash over them but associated with Territory of Lowndes and after it's suppressed during US's Wars > White Knight rebellions (1878-94) they are tolerated

-also come in due to railroad construction

-recruited due to worker shortages especially during construction of American Infrastructure > Pembina Pacific Railroad

-and other railroad construction in the Interior

-a lot of them move to Olympia due to it being right on the Pacific coast

-and due to gold rushes bringing in a lot of them to Columbia and then after being kicked out by locals fleeing to Olympia

-and because they are brought during railroad construction

-despite unpopularity in the Interior and Olympia its weakness means the movement for Chinese exclusion does not succeed

-Chinese immigration expands hard in 1880s

-before crashing during Russo-Chinese War (1893-9)

-it takes until well into 20th century for it to rise back to these pretty high levels

Japanese-Americans

-with Japan having a rougher ride to modernization (Heads of Japan > 1860-1911 Tokugawa Yoshinobu) it has much higher rates of emigration

-as part of rise of remittances, with a number of them eventually moving back

-with a lot of Japanese emigrants moving to the US

-a lot of whalers coming in to the US

-especially Rhode Island

-additionally need to repopulate and revive south after Liberty and Union War (1868-76) results in Japanese attracted south

-in Mississippi Delta and in Carolinas over rice revival

-Japanese is focal point because there's a pretty big Japanese population surplus

Korean-Americans

-after Russian defeat in Russo-Chinese War (1893-9) a lot of Korean migrants fleeing rise of Heads of Korea > 1901-1933 Gwangseo Emperor also flee across Pacific

-mostly Orthodox but people associated with Joseon dynasty also flee

-creating a Korean minority particularly in Olympia

Vietnamese-Americans

-with Vietnam having a high labor surplus a lot of Vietnamese travel to the US

-additionally, the US seeks to drive up sugar production and Vietnamese expertise looked to

-sees a lot of Vietnamese brought in to the Gulf coast for their expertise

-Vietnamese sugar plantations emerge in Deep South

-succeeds in Orleans in particular but also in Mississippi and Yazoo

-Georgia sees some pretty large ones

-and West Florida sees some pretty notable ones

-failure in South Carolina despite attempts to make more suitable breeds

Tungcheng

-Chinese word for "Eastern Orthodox"

-Chinese Orthodox in and around Manchuria fleeing Russo-Chinese War (1893-9) and reprisals of Chinese effort come into the US

-for the most part, they flee into Olympia, and specifically Port Townsend

-form their own discrete community

-often alienated from rest of Chinese-Americans

-due to its disdain of Chinese republicanism and its firm religious identity

-and often viewed as Russian in practice

Hunsher

-half-Chinese half-white

-comes from this

-most of the Chinese who come in during the early stage are young men of pretty marriable age

-and viewed as something above Colored people

-for the most part it's in Olympia and Interior that they immigrate in this era

-and with the Southron Bride Trek bringing a lot of women a lot of them marry these Chinese men

-creating Hunsher community

-with the men converting and most of them become Baptists

Aynoco

-half-Japanese half-White (from this )

-with name transliterated this way because it looks Hispanic and sort of like mulatto and the like

-a lot of these in Olympia as well as along the US's coast

-with New Orleans having a fairly high Aynoco population

-most of these are men which means a lot of white intermarriage

Colored-Americans

-aka "Africans"

-though this is generally considered an offensive phrase as it implies they aren't really American

-following Liberty and Union War (1868-76) emancipation became law in the US and they won the right to vote

-and became included in the political system

-and also with both it and southern out-migration they became majorities in certain southern states which later immigration does not change

-South Carolina, Mississippi, Orleans, Georgia

-growth of Lille means that Yazoo now no longer has a Colored majority though it did historically

-with Reconstruction there is some interracial marriage albeit still at low rates

-in particular with new immigrants

-and most interracial marriages there are have black woman with white man because the other is viewed as much worse

-relatively late to urbanization because land ownership is very important part of Colored culture

Mulatto

-still an extant racial category and never excluded from census

-with urbanization of slavery, there emerges a mulatto freed category with some degree of education

-which tends to be disproportionately urban

-with Liberty and Union War (1868-76) they emerge as leaders of the Coloreds de facto

-but in practice this is swiftly broken with rise of mass literacy as well as a degree of resentment

-with destruction of white male pop by war there's a degree of intermarriage

-but relatively minor in practice, unusual but not rare

-with mass immigration of many men (particularly Germans) into the South some marry Colored women

-which helps further enhance growth of a mulatto racial category and also they're more rural than otherwise

Moreno

-used to describe Colored-Americans descended from slaves sold to the Antilles under the trans-Caribbean slave trade

-quite a lot of them got semi-Hispanicized during that time simply because they lived alongside a bunch of Hispanic people

-and also because their children grew up in such an environment

-then returned following the Antillean War (1880-4) as they are, under law, citizens of the United States

-incl. children and other descendants as well as a number of other Cuban freedmen who also choose to move northwards

-in terms of religion many of them are in fact Catholic, but most of them are good Protestants

-most of them got settled into cities across the eastern seaboard

-giving a whole bunch of northern cities a large Colored minority for the first time

-while existing Colored minorities there do not view them as kin

-Northern white dissent kicks off a series of race riots in the 1890s

-eventually environment settles down and Little Cubas exist across cities

-also in New Orleans and rest of Orleans state they simply become absorbed into Creole community

-Moreno is one of several demonyms attached to them, and considered the least offensive

-a lot of Morenos open "Cuba-style" restaurants and the like

-Cuban sandwiches heavy on pork having become an iconic food of American cuisine

African-Americans

-there is a very large amount of Colored missionaries who go to Africa

-as part of efforts to "civilize" and Christianize the motherland

-this in turn leads to pretty large numbers of Africans who choose to send their children to American schools

-particularly from West Africa which is beachhead for American missions

-for education and the like

-because there is a pretty large Colored infrastructure in the US

-with Africa being richer here there are way more Africans having the money to emigrate

-but at the same time Africa is still a fair bit poorer than the west

-Most of them are West African, with perhaps a plurality of immigrants being Yoruba and the next biggest Igbo

-but still quite diverse

-following Zanzibar Revolution, a lot of Zanzibari people emigrate to the US

-and unusually, many of them are Muslim and all which gives the US a large Muslim minority
